 Monday, February 27, 2006 - 37 Weeks and 1 Day ~ 20 days to go

Not really a Baby Vence update, it’s more of a puppy Vence update.  Well Bob took a phone call from the Vet this afternoon that brought a word into the Vence Household we pray would not have to be used again for a very long time…  cancer.

Our little boxer girl Eisa had a spot of some form of cancer on the top of her right back foot.  We noticed it a few weeks back, and while Bob was in Arizona, it looked like she had broken it open and it was bleeding again.  It hadn’t necessarily gotten worse, but it hadn’t necessarily gotten any better either, so I took her in.  There were also some spots between her toes that I hadn’t originally seen, but since I can hardly see my own toes, you can’t fault me for not noticing hers. :) A few hours, four hundred dollars, some skin scrapings and a needle aspiration later, she was diagnosed with a fungal infection and sent home with some meds.  Bob noticed marked improvement on the spots between her toes over this last week, but the one on the top of her foot wasn’t making much progress and was again cracked and bleeding.  We were getting ready to make her follow up appointment when the call came from the vet, the needle aspiration biopsy came back malignant.  *Sigh*

Our vet was very flexible and knowing that we are expecting a baby in a few weeks, agreed to get her into surgery the very same day.  Bob got the call from Dr. Davis around 9:30 pm to say that Eisa had come out of surgery fine, the spot was removed cleanly and that she was recovering from the anesthesia.  Now to wait for the pathology to come back and tell us what type of cancer it is and what, if any, additional treatment would be necessary.  We just can’t imagine having to deal with the thought of radiation or chemo, after all, you can’t really explain to a dog that you’re making her sick on purpose.  Our prayers are that we wouldn’t have to make that decision at all, but we’ll wait to cross that bridge when we come to it.
